Bob Samuels, Chairman of the Florida Prostate Cancer Network (FPCN) announces the success of the 5th African-American Men’s Health Forum held Saturday, March 6, 2004. Over 1,000 individuals attended the event starting at 8 AM and finishing at 1PM at Hillsborough Community College, Dale Mabry Campus. With community collaboration and teamwork between area hospitals, physicians, nurses, medical staff and volunteers, more than 700 people participated in a variety of health screening; prostate cancer, colon cancer, blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes. Two men were referred to the emergency rooms of local hospitals for immediate medical attention as a result of their abnormal screenings.
Physicians from throughout the community volunteered their time and professional skills to present a variety of workshops. Former Buccaneer Steve White was joined by other athletes in autographing this year’s poster “Real Men get Checked” during breaks in the health educational workshops. Sponsors and exhibitors displayed information and talked with many attendees throughout the event.

Florida Prostate Cancer Network has been recognized as a model state cancer coalition by a number of agencies including:  the Florida State Legislature, Florida Department of Health and the Florida Agency for Healthcare Administration.  FPCN’s programs include a speakers’ bureau, counseling referral program, peer counselor network, educational forums, health fairs, support groups, and a newsletter.
